Abby
Abby, our Black Lab, has been chosen as a candidate for training in Search & Rescue, to help find people and/or Drugs. She has shown the qualities of tenacity, determination, and stamina that are a good indication of success as a search & rescue dog. She will begin her training to see if she qualifies. Stay tuned for updates on her progress. We are so proud of her!
Levi
Levi has been adopted to a wonderful family in the northeast. We are so happy that this great dog has the love and attention he deserves. Best wishes, Levi! We hope you have a great life!
Sadie
Sadie has been adopted! She is with her new family in New York! We are very glad that she's found a good home, because she is a wonderful dog!
Dixie
We were looking to adopt a small dog to add to our "pack" of two other rescues. Sherri introduced us to Dixie in August 2009, and we took her home on the spot. It took her about a day to come out of her shell, but now she prances around like she owns the place, and we love her to bits! She loves to sit in your lap when you're watching TV. As long as you're petting her, she's content and happy. We're very lucky to have her. We think she's the sweetest dog in the world.
Dotty
Dotty was a Hardeman County stray who was found on Highway 138. When I tried to encourage her to go home, she jumped in my arms and kissed me. It was clear that I didn't choose her, but she chose me! She loves to play ball and go for walks. She even completed the Hardeman County K-9 Obedience Class last year with flying colors!
D. J. (Dandy Jean)
We adopted D.J. in July, and we have absolutely fallen in love with her. She is the first rescue dog we've ever had, but I'm not sure if we rescued her or she rescued us!
Our first stray.
Shortly after moving to Hardeman County Sam showed up at our backdoor. He was a German Shepherd mix about 4 months old. Even though we tried to find his owner, no one claimed him. Little did we know that he was the first in a long line of dogs dumped on our road.
Sam is very smart, loves to play catch and loves the water. He is about 10 now and still going strong!

Huff & Puff
These two precious kittens were found, along with 5 brothers and sisters, under an a/c unit. Homes were found for all except Huff and Puff, and they came to live at our house. They have been such a joy. We understand that several more litters were born in that same place...same mother cat. Why don't people have their pets altered! -
Jasper
We have Sherri Chance to thank for introducing us to Jasper, a very small, very special, Sheltie. I inquired about another adult sheltie that I found at Hardeman County Animal Control thru Petfinder.com. It was already adopted. Sherri took time to talk with me about my interests in an adult dog and quickly thought of Jasper as a wonderful match for our family. What a blessing! We have had 8 weeks of joy & smiles with this precious little guy. We hope he is enjoying his new home & life as much as we are enjoying him. -
Our ball of energy
The week before Thanksgiving my husband and I went for another visit to see Sherri. She told us that she was going to send away an adorable puppy she had before I came so that I wouldn't be tempted to take home another puppy.
So I spent the week with her, helping with her dogs and getting some of the dogs from the Hardeman County shelter that she wanted to bring home to prepare for adoption day. There was another dog that I found adorable from the shelter. He was white with black patches. But Sherri felt he was not the pup for me. He was a bit of a trouble maker and was not ready for a new home just yet.
I was upset, but I understood. Then she decided to surprise me and bring the puppy that she had sent away back, so that i could see him. She knew that I would fall in love with him.... And i did.
From the get go I couldn't keep my hands off of the cutie pie. His name is Petie and he is the most sweet and loving puppy. His favorite past-time is chasing his long, whipping tail. He's just a nut! And boy does he love to give kisses.
When we first introduced him to our 1yr old dog Tyler (mentioned in a previous rescue), Petie just walked up to him and Tyler jumped back not knowing what to do. But since we brought Petie home, him and Tyler have been great brothers. And thanks to Petie, Tyler is a young boy again.

A fighter
When my husband and I went to visit Sherri Chance (my mother-in-law) for New Years 2006, we never thought that we would be bringing home a new part of our family. My husband and I had been planning on getting a Yorkie, but God and Tyler had a different plan for us.
When Sherri introduced us to Tyler, I instantly fell in love. He was a tiny little thing. He looked like he had a rat tail and his belly was still swollen from worms. But I didn't care. I was willing to take the chance and have hope that he would get through it. And he did!
Sherri didn't think he would grow much since he was so sickly at first. But Tyler surprised us all. We even had a scare later when we found out he had severe hip displasia, but he fought that too with help of his new brother Petie. He is now 63lbs and as happy as can be. We love him so much and couldn't imagine life without him. -

Angel
Angel is truly an Angel! She was found in Hornsby and rescued by some kind people who took her to Adoption Day. Angel seems very happy at her new home at Toone.
The Best Dog I've Ever Owned
Pug came to me about two years ago. She is a Boston Terrier/ Fiest mix. She was very skiddish and hungry. She loved to ride in the vehicle though. I cared for her and nursed her back to good health. She has a very unique personality. She's very picky and only likes the most expensive food and toys. She's a little dog but somehow manages to take up the whole bed at night. When she came to me you could tell she was kept outside, but I decided to try her inside. She basically trained herself. She is such an amazing dog and I'm very glad she found me.
Where are you goin?
George is named after "Curious George." He has always been "in to" something. George came to us through a friend who lives in Bolivar on a busy street. His first name was Dandy, after yankee doodly dandy. He was found on July 4. He loves to get up on your lap and curl up for hours, if you let him.
Chester
Chester is doing great! We adopted him in Jan 07 & he adapted to our family very quickly. He & his step sister Macy (Jack Russell Terrier) are the best of friends. He loves to go walking and play ball. -
The Show's Star
Reload was an out of control dog whose owner threw him out on Hwy 57, hoping that he would get hit by a car, or just disappear! He returned and out of desperation was then boarded in a kennel for an indefinite period of time in a small run. He proceeded to do cartwheels in the cage, like a hamster, our of sheer boredom. The workers started calling him “Stupid Dog”. I took “stupid Dog” home, changed his name and began to work with him and in two weeks he passed an obedience class that it takes most dogs two months to master. Reload is now part of a Pet Awareness Program for school children and shines like the Star that he is…he is one of my very special rescues. Reload is proof that any dog, with kindness, patience and dedication can be a “Star”.
Angel - by Judy Cooksey
When Angel died the latter part of 2003, with her she took a piece of my heart, tears are rolling as I post this story. The reason I post it is to make the point :
Animals, like people, need an environment that allows them to be wonderful!
Angle was someone's "throw away but precious to me".

Angel - by Judy Cooksey
Back in August of 1999, I found a female shepherd mix down by our pond and it was evident that someone had dropped her off and drowned her pups. It took me three days to get her to trust me enough to come up to the house. We named her Angel -- short for Guardian Angel. She won our hearts by following me everywhere. When I leave in my van, she follows me to the end of the drive and waits, no matter how long, until I return. It's reassuring late at night, in our isolated country setting, to see the shine of those "Angel Eyes" waiting for me.
Angel went in for her "spaying" and when I went to pick her up 24 hours later the Vet would not release her because she had not recovered as expected. I drove the 30 miles home with an occasional tear falling down my cheek. On the second day after her operation, I brought her home but it was obvious to me that she had either been in a fight or had really hurt herself attempting to escape, her back right hind quarter had 3 lacerations.
Angel At 4:00 AM the next morning she woke me up with a "help me" bark. I got up turned on all the lights and began calling her. She finally appeared and I tried to get her to come into the house but she would not. Although she loves and protects me, she didn't trust me enough to be confined. Again, I screamed like a crazy woman at the stray male dog that I could only assume was bothering her. Unable to get the 60-pound dog in the van, I went to the Vets and obtained medication and instructions on treating her.
The following day the Angel's leg was badly swollen and she was having a great difficulty walking. Yet when I made my daily trip to my Mother's, she was down at the bottom of the drive to meet me when I returned. She had to drag herself the 100 yards back to the house. I used the porch swing cushion to make her a bed on the back porch and hand fed her. After her tremendous effort to continue to be the Guardian Angel, she was having trouble standing to eat.
My husband was working in Nashville during the week coming home for the weekends. Saturday morning he removed the bandages. We were both afraid she was going to die or at minimum lose her leg but after a couple of weeks she was completely well.

Dearly Missed
I found Horse on one of the coldest days in Jan. 1999. I was out looking at houses and seen him in the backyard. His previous owners left him in the backyard with all their trash. I went home to get the truck and a friend to help me pick him up, he weighed about 50 lbs. When I returned to take him home with me, he wagged his tail. He knew something good was about to happen. He had no collar or front teeth. He did not know how to jump into the back of a truck and I had never had such a large animal. My friend picked him up and placed Horse in the bed of the truck and we placed blankets around both of them. It was close to an hour drive back to the house but Horse did not care. He knew he was in good hands.
It snowed on Horse's first night at his new home. But he did not care, he had a warm dog house, fresh food and someone to love him. Dr. Frank did not know what kind of dog Horse was the first visit. Horse was so skinny. He had mange and all his pads on his feet were cracked and had been bleeding. Dr. Frank said he did not think Horse would have survived the bad weather that had set in, not in his condition. It took us six weeks to get the mange cleared up. Several months to get his weight up to his 90 lbs.
Our nick name for Horse was " Old Gentleman". He never got jealous of our other pets. He never snapped or bit anyone. He always shared his food with out cats, if they thought they wanted a bite. He will be missed. I think of him so often.

Chihuahua
Nacho was found in the midle of a busy highway. The toes on both front and back paws were raw and had no hair, as if he had been pulled along the road. He is so loving but even after a year is still very shy around strangers. He loves to cuddle with his nose against my neck
Hershey was my first Chihuahua rescue
Hershey was my first Chihuahua rescue. He was skin and bones, a broken front leg that had healed in place and testicular cancer. The cancer is cured, he is fat and happy, and for a year and a half wrote the weekly "Pet Talk" article for the Bolivar Bulletin (even with his broken leg!)
Dumplin - the only dog that I have that smiles
Dumplin was a cruelty case rescue. She went from foster to a permanent part of my family. She is wonderful...the only dog that I have that smiles. Pictured from left to right are Teeney Weeney, Boogie and little Dumplin
Melanie - Wonder Dog
She sits, shakes, kisses, down, go up (goes into her crate) and potty! Could you ask for more?
Beautiful German Shepherd - Melanie
Melanie was rescued in April of 2007. When introduced, she looked at me and walked over and gave me a kiss! She had made up her mind and in one second, had bonded!
She is smart and friendly to all of our bulldogs and our other rescue dogs and our stray cat!
She's about five years old with no sign of hip dysplasia! She wants to be with me whenever I go outside to do chores and loves to ride in the car.
