T he English bulldog puppy is descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff and the Chinese Pug but all of his great grand parents originated in Great Britain. The name bulldog, which is medieval in origin, refers to the look of a little bull and also to the ferociousness with which this dog attacked bulls in bull baiting contests before that practice was prohibited by law two hundred years ago. Today's bulldog has a very different temperament from those of his ancestors.
With the passing of time, and with the prohibition of fights, the English bulldog puppy's disposition and physical look gradually changed to the bulldog that exists today. The bulldog's short snout and nose that points upwards was extremely useful during combat with bulls, but in truth makes the cooling of air difficult. The bulldog gets easily tired even when mating.
The English bulldog puppy grows up to be a "beautiful" and a loving family member.
Personality If in its origin the Bulldog was considered "a fierce dog" and used in combats, today this is merely a legend. Even with its "bad dog" expression, the Bulldog is an excellent companion, very sweet and affectionate. Despite the solid and heavy physical structure, the Bulldog can be a playful friend and it is very energetic. It is a peaceful dog, which gets along very well with children if they respect its limits. It gets along very well with other dogs as long as there is no aggressiveness in the relationship. A good puppy must be active, with a large head, very wrinkled, inferior teeth overlapping the superior ones. Until 50 days of age the nose can be colored, but should
turn black.
Common problems of the breed The breed may develop skin rashes, dermatitis and
demodécica scabies. If your bully does have a tendency for such skin sensitivities,
these can be controlled by weekly bathing with an anti-bacterial,
anti-fungal shampoo from your vet.
It needs attention as far as the cleaning of the folds in the skin around the nose and neck. Each day (while on the couch with you watching tv) clean the folds with a baby wipe and powder with corn starch or talc.

At that time, bulldogs were very
different from the current standard. The adult English bulldog was similar to the boxer
in that he was taller, muscular and agile, with straighter and longer limbs.
Its most striking feature, the lower jaw, became more developed than the upper jaw in
order to bite the nostrils and the neck of the bull.
The front legs, short and
spaced, and the front well wider than the pelvic area, that during the fight were
essential to hobble the opponents, are the same that prevent, in about nine out of ten of
the cases, natural births, since the female bulldog's pelvic bones do not dilate
to the point of allowing the bulldog puppies’ heads to go through easily. About 90%
of the English bulldog's births are induced by cesarean. In addition,
the English bulldog male's size and lack of stamina do not allow sucessful mating
which results in the need for artificial insemination.
